This article is an analysis of the determinants of the voluntary choice of the informal sector by the workers as well as the reasons which motivate their choices. The data used comes from a survey carried out in December 2021 in five main cities of Burkina Faso. The individuals studied are active people working in the informal sector. The sample covers 1250 informal enterprises and the questions are preferably addressed to managers. Thus, the study reveals two significant results: Firstly, the entry of workers into the labor market through the informal sector may be a voluntary choice and not a forced choice (62.2% of workers have chosen to work in the informal sector voluntarily against 37.8% who chose under constraints). Moreover, voluntary choice is motivated by the tax and non-tax benefits that individuals receive by remaining in the informal sector. Secondly, based on a logistic model, the study indicates that the variables: gender, age, marital status, family origin, place of residence, level of education, experience in managing a company, the status in the household and the level of income are determinants of the voluntary choice of the informal sector.Downloads
