The aim of this article is to analyze the link between the demographic cycle and sustainable development in the African franc zone over the last two decades. We used the estimation of an autoregressive distributed lag model (ARDL) by the Pooled Mean Group (PMG) method to test the hypothesis that the demographic cycle negatively influences sustainable development. This is reflected in the negative effect of demographic pressure on the area's terrestrial biocapacity. However, although this is a long-term risk, demographic and environmental policies need to be put in place now to guard against it. Coordination of short- and long-term policies to control population flows and protect the environment is essential to maintain and/or increase the biocapacity of the area, a prerequisite for its sustainable development.
