Abstract

Abstract

This article analyzes the contribution of management control to the performance of microfinance institutions (MFIs), distinguishing between financial performance and social performance. These institutions operate in a particular context, characterized by the need to preserve their economic viability while pursuing a mission of financial inclusion. The present research is based on a review of theoretical and empirical literature devoted to the main concepts and management control practices used in MFIs. The analysis focuses in particular on budgetary management, dashboards, and performance indicators, considered as mechanisms contributing to the management and monitoring of activities. The literature reviewed indicates that these practices can support planning, resource management, performance monitoring, information flows, and decision-making. They can also facilitate the monitoring of social objectives and contribute to a better articulation between financial and social requirements. However, their contribution to performance does not appear to be uniform and depends on several conditions, including the quality of available information, governance mechanisms, and the organizational context. The study therefore highlights the relevance of management control as an integrated management system in which budgetary management, dashboards, and performance indicators jointly contribute to monitoring the financial and social performance of microfinance institutions.
