Abstract

As a result of accelerating economic and competitive pressures, the Balanced Scorecard (BSC) is generating significant interest among small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), even though this tool was originally developed for large and medium-sized companies. This study presents a bibliometric analysis of the research field dedicated to the Balanced Scorecard as applied to SMEs, based on a corpus of 68 articles extracted from the Scopus database and analyzed using the VOSviewer software. The final sample, obtained after applying strict selection criteria (keyword search, research field, document type), consists of 68 documents published between 2004 and 2025. The methodological approach is based on a descriptive bibliometric analysis combined with an analysis of keyword and co-author co-occurrence by country, conducted using the VOSviewer software. The study provides insights into four research questions concerning the temporal evolution of publications, the productivity of authors and journals, the geographic distribution of research, and the main themes structuring this field.

The findings show that this area of research, which began in 2004, remained relatively insignificant for nearly fifteen years. It then experienced strong growth starting in 2017. Scientific output remains highly dispersed, with no single author or journal clearly dominating, and international collaboration between countries remains virtually nonexistent despite a genuine geographic diversity of contributions, with the United Kingdom, India, and Thailand among the most productive countries. An analysis of keywords shows that the main themes are performance measurement, strategy and entrepreneurship, risk management, and operations management. The oldest themes, centered on operations management, are becoming less prominent and are being replaced by more recent themes related to innovation and entrepreneurship.

This study thus provides a rigorous overview of a field of research that is still evolving and suggests avenues for future research, particularly the strengthening of international scientific collaboration and a deeper exploration of the strategic role of the Balanced Scorecard within SMEs.
