Abstract
This article analyses the contribution of market activities developed around Jatropha curcas L. to the economic empowerment of rural women in the communes of Ouinhi, Djidja and Zangnanado in southern Benin. Based on field research combining semi-structured interviews, focus group discussions and prospective analysis of stakeholder dynamics using the MACTOR method, involving 153 producers and a sample of women engaged in seed collection and soap making from Jatropha curcas L. oil, the article reveals a paradoxical configuration. Women occupy strategically decisive positions both upstream and downstream of the value chain (seed collection and marketing on the one hand, soap manufacturing and sales on the other) giving them a cumulative influence score higher than that of any other individual actor in the system, including technical facilitators. This strategic repositioning contrasts sharply with their marginalisation in traditional cash crop sectors such as cotton and cashew. However, the empowerment generated by this market participation remains structurally ambivalent. While it partially modifies domestic power relations by giving women increased negotiating capacity in decisions related to food, health and children’s schooling, it simultaneously reproduces their assignment to the traditionally feminine spheres of reproduction and care, without enabling access to strategic decisions regarding productive investments and asset accumulation. The sexual division of agricultural labour, based on a naturalisation of differentiated physical capacities, further confines women to the least remunerated tasks in the production process despite their quantitatively majority contribution.
